Get Free Help: Free assistance with real estate
and space issues is available through our Technical Advisory Panel.
The panel is made up of construction experts, architects, space
planners, real estate attorneys, and others who have generously
donated pro-bono services to help non-profits find and secure new
space. To take advantage of this help, please contact Anna Yee of
the Mayor's Office of Community Development, at 415-252-3130.
This website, orgSpaces.org, will help you search
for new space on line, work through your decision making process,
and learn about our efforts. A workbook to help guide you through
the process of securing new space will be available on-line in December..
Get Space: Join our matching service if you
have space or need space. Contact Marie Jones at the San Francisco

Permanently Affordable Space
- Pier 70: The Port has set aside 150,000 square feet
for permanently affordable non-profit space at Pier 70. RFQ's
are due June 26,2001 and a development plan should be selected
sometime thereafter. This space should be available by 2002.
- City Projects: The City is building permanently
affordable non-profit space in City affordable housing,
Recreation and Park, and Redevelopment Agency projects.
Funding
- Loans to Create Nonprofit Space at Housing Developments and Community Centers:
The San Francisco Mayor's Offices of Community Development and Housing have created a new revolving loan fund to help finance the creation of nonprofit space connected to affordable housing developments and/or multi-tenant community centers in critical development areas/neighborhoods. Applicants must have development experience or be working with an experienced partner, must have ownership of property or a long-term lease, and must have a development plan in place. Loans will be provided on favorable terms that are determined on a case by case basis. At least some of the nonprofit tenants at the project must serve low and moderate income individuals. For eligibility guidelines and other information, contact Laurie Pantell at (415) 252-3192.
- The Nonprofit Space Capital Fund has been created through an initial appropriation of $2.5 million by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. The Capital Fund will provide grants to San Francisco-based nonprofits seeking to establish new permanently affordable nonprofit office space through capital improvement projects or the acquisition of real estate. The Mayor's Office of Community Development has contracted with Northern California Community Loan Fund (NCCLF) to administer the Capital Fund, and to raise additional funds to support the Capital Fund's goals and operations. The Capital Fund will provide grants for nonprofits to perform capital improvements or acquire real property within San Francisco. The fund will provide a portion of the equity needed for such projects; however, applicants will be expected to significantly leverage the grant funds with other resources. For eligibility guidelines and other information, contact Catherine Howard at (415) 392-8215.
- Non-Profit Space Fund: This fund will provide grants,
low-interest loans, and equity investments to acquire, develop
and rehabilitate permanently affordable space for non-profits
in San Francisco. We are currently developing the fund with donations
from the business community, foundations, and State, Federal and
City government.
Existing Financing & Planning Assistance
California Communities
California Communities has established a program to finance
a variety of projects for private, non-profit organizations.
Each project provides a significant public benefit to the
local community. Health service providers represent the majority
of projects, but financing has been provided for museums,
research institutes, social services and community centers.
Northern California Community
Loan Fund
NCCLF is a nonprofit lender dedicated to strengthening the
economic base of low income and minority communities. As
a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), we
lend to nonprofit organizations which serve these communities
that have limited access to financing from traditional lenders.
We believe in a personal, flexible approach to lending and
a hands-on partnership with each of our borrowers.
Nonprofit Finance
Fund
The Nonprofit Finance Fund provides nonprofit cultural organizations with the resources to plan, develop, and maintain their facilities that honor their missions, foster their growth, and strengthen their financial health. This goal is achieved through several programs: small planning grants for pre-development needs, including feasibility studies and engineering consultations; loans for both "hard" and "soft" costs in facilities development and construction; and technical assistance, which includes planning workshops, individual consultations, and referrals.
Arts Loan Fund of Northern California
Grantmakers
The Arts Loan Fund, ALF, helps agencies manage their cash
flow needs, and is not designed to replace contributed income.
While large non-profit institutions and businesses can use
commercial lenders, community arts groups generally cannot
draw upon resources. The ALF attmpts to fill this gap and
to provide a useful financial tool for small and mid-sized
arts groups (annual budget usually less than $1 million).
San Francisco Partnership
The San Francisco Partnership offers complementary confidential,
strategic assistance and innovative solutions for companies considering
expanding and/or relocating their businesses to San Francisco. The
Partnership brings the skills and knowledge required to maximize
resources and returns by providing companies a valuable edge in
such areas as permitting, site selection, financing, job training,
and access to a host of specialized incentive programs-all designed
to help business grow and prosper.
National Community
Capital Association
The National Community Capital Association is a national
membership organization of community development financial
institutions (CDFIs). National Community Capital's Member
CDFIs provide capital, technical assistance, and development
services to support the revitalization of economically-disadvantaged
urban, rural, and reservation-based communities across the
United States. National Community Capital also represents
more than 200 Associates-organizations and individuals that
support National Community Capital's mission.
